NCSSM is committed to creating a community free from sexual harassment, sexual violence, and gender-based harassment. If you are experiencing harassment or violence, please report to any adult on campus including the Title IX Coordinator.

If you decide to report an incident, you have options. If you report an incident of sexual harassment or violence, our first concern is your safety. If you need medical attention or counseling services, that will be the first priority. Our next steps involve a conversation with the Title IX Coordinator. The goal of our conversation is to make sure we share all of the support available to you, gather basic details of the incident, and find out your initial goals in reporting. It is suggested that the complainant share the name of the respondent with the Title IX Coordinator. This allows the coordinator to determine if the respondent has been involved in any other Title IX incidents which helps to assess danger to the community.

If you decide to complete an incident report, the Title IX Coordinator will review your report and facilitate the next steps in the investigation. For Title IX incidents, NCSSM can request a Title IX investigator from one of the UNC System schools to assist. These investigators have experience interviewing students and completing Title IX incident reports. The NCSSM Title IX Coordinator will continue to be the main point of contact regarding the investigation for the complainant and respondent. Once the investigation and report are complete, the NCSSM charge committee will meet to determine the appropriate charges. The complainant and the respondent will both be able to review the investigatory report in writing at NCSSM.

A student can report an incident, request anonymity, and receive support and accommodations. If you do not want to formally report an incident, it will limit the school's ability to investigate the incident. Sometimes a complainant may request that their name not be used or the respondent not be informed about their report, in that instance, the school may not be able to pursue a code of conduct investigation.

Accommodations may include but are not limited to the following:

  • students not assigned to the same pod
  • students alternate attending class with some sessions recorded for the student not attending
  • scheduled use of campus facilities like the cafeteria, library, and PEC
  • no contact orders between students
  • students switching sections of a class
  • residence hall room changes
  • underloads

The Title IX Coordinator will work with the complainant to determine if it is necessary to inform their legal guardians. If possible, the complainant will make decisions about communication with the legal guardian and has the option of counseling or other trusted adult support when reaching out to their guardians. If a medical crisis or emergency is occurring and immediate medical attention is required, the legal guardians will be informed so that treatment can begin.

If you are not sure something should be reported, feel free to talk to the Title IX Coordinator. Share a hypothetical situation, ask questions, bring examples, and get your questions answered.
